Ingredients:
2 cups milk
5 tablespoons butter
1/2 large loaf of stale French bread torn in small pieces
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup whiskey (or rum)
1/2 cup raisins (soaked in whiskey for 2 hours)
1/2 cup powdered sugar
Preparation:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) .
- Scald the milk, add the butter and pour hot liquid over the bread cubes – soak about 5 minutes then add sugar, eggs, whiskey and spices. Add the raisins.
- Pour mixture into buttered baking dish. Set the dish in a pan of hot water and bake until knife inserted in the center comes out clean, or one hour.
- Topping: in a saucepan over low heat, add in 3 tablespoons of butter and let melt. Whisk in sugar until dissolved. Remove from heat and pour in whiskey you saved from the raisins and whisk together. As the bread pudding cools, pour topping on top.
Instead of topping you can serve rum sauce, custard sauce or brandy butter (hard sauce).

this is not bread pudding as my mother used to make.It included suet flour and 1 egg.bread was soaked in water and then squeezed out,
Unfortunatly mum has passed away and I have no-one to get this old recipe from so was hoping you could help me.
I believe this recipe is closest to what you’re looking for: SUET Pudding with PEARS
Thanks. This recipe appears quite similar to the one my Mom made back in the late 1930s and 1940s.
I am looking for a recipe for a fruit cake with a lot more cake than fruit! I remember seeing one years ago in a store, but have neve seen one since. Thanks Dena
